My Black

Colorism is still alive and well in the Black community and over the years I’ve sought to bring attention to this inane practice in many different ways. I had the idea to wrap models in brown paper bringing attention to one of the many tools of colorism: the “brown paper bag test.” While the series came out in a way that makes my point, it just didn’t feel right to use a tool of colorism to bring attention to colorism. Sure, it may gain more attention … but will it end the practice? Probably not.

I’m choosing now to simply show the beauty of ALL skin tones - from the richest black, to the creamiest caramel. Maybe someday, all black people will see black people as I do: beautiful.
